There are very few films that are masterpieces, among theme only a couple are so touching, so strong that you can't watch them again.
Amour (IMDB), by Michael Haneke is among the latter.
The cast is superb, as well known Jean-Louis Trintignant backs to acting only when Haneke asks and as always he brings you to the core of human struggles of the character, and Emmanuelle Riva oh how good... she is absolutely majestic. She did not win the Oscar, but she won many other and more important awards. The movie got the best foreign movie, nonetheless. Haneke is Austrian meanwhile he is french is 'directing'.
Ah, it got the Palm d'Or in Cannes.
Personally I respect Berlin, Venice and Cannes film festivals. You win there, I humbly bow.
The story? It's the story of deep love in an elderly couple, when... when I cannot tell you. You must watch it. It's a deep look into the darkness side of love. I am not even sure I can express what it really means without spoiling you the pleasure of a great narrative, superb acting and enveloping directing.
Watch it, it does not give you answer, it gives you what it is. Love.
Not for everyone, must be willing to face deep hard questions about love we all may have had and are afraid to have to face. No 'popcorn' icon. It is not... well, it is better not to.
