Road to Oscar 2021: What We Watched & What We Think

We are not particularly fans of Oscar nominated movies, but we like, when we can, get the hint and watch the movies in the foreign/best movies categories.
Sometimes we agree with the Academy's choices, sometimes we don't. Not that it matters.

Watched so far:

- Mank 8

- Nomadland 7.9

- The Trial of The Chicago Seven 7.6

- Judas and the Black Messiah 7.5

- Minari 5

Why these votes?

Mank (IMDB) is fascinating for the way it tells the story of one of the most incredible screenplay writers (Mank) while he is working at Citizen Kane. Cinematography is majestic, David Fincher is a genius and Gary Oldman deserves another Oscar. I think I said it all.

Nomadland (IMDB) is very very good. Well it's the Golden Lion at Venice Film Festival after all... and as European I usually prefer what gets prizes in Berlin, Venice, Cannes etc. Anyway Nomadland tells the story of yet another America, it does not judge, it does not claim to be right or wrong, just another American, legit like all other, with its faults and greatness.

The Trial of The Chicago Seven (IMDB) It is never easy to deal with biopics or recent history events, cinema forces you, somehow, to change this or that, to put more 'accent' on something, the performance of this or that actor may be too strong or too weak... You understand. Well the story of this movie is well told, sure 7 (8 in reality) stories (plus everyone around) are complex matter for a movie, the events the background... but it is well told. Some stories are left aside, explanation is in the movie itself, and Sascha Baron Cohen and Frank Langella performances are absolutely over the top. Worth watching.

Judas and The Black Messiah (IMDB) what a Kaluuya performance! Wow! My vote is mostly because of this performance. The rest of the movie lacks of the psychological 'Judas' troubles, which could have made it a great movie.

Minari (IMDB) Obscene. You always know what’s coming, easy plot that misses all possible stories, and they are many. Predictable in plot, moments and ideas. Really a disappointment. Performances are flat, except for the grandmother (a well deserved nomination for best actress in supporting role), the small kid and 'crazy man', which unfortunately could have been central, each of them.
