Menu of The Day: The Monk of Mokha, by Dave Eggers

The Monk of Mokha

Is this a book about what exactly? Coffee lovers? War-torn Yemen? Its beautiful tradition and incredible people? Is it about the American Dream nowadays?

It is a bit of all of them. It is a truly remarkable San Francisco story at the beginning, with extremely low profile immigrant family, holding on their heritage and aiming to have their kids growing as best as they could with all their sacrifice. One of them has an idea, suddenly. To revive what was once the Yemeni thing: the coffee!

It's a book about his trip(s), his up and down, some extremely dangerous I have to say, his gamble on people's good will and much more, well... all these make the book worth reading and really, it is is a true story. Even if it seems incredible.
Enjoy it because it is not simply very well written, but it also speaks a lot about determination and it is enchanting, or at least it was so for me. It is a story about struggles, belief and giving back.

You will enjoy discovering traditions you had no idea about, the story of coffee, the harshness of the lives behind the coffee you may drink every morning and cheer for a guy which adventures seems out of a movie.
