Menu of the Weekend: Alien 3, a movie by David Fincher

Alien 3

I know it is a rather unusual topic among all these less known movies and books, I know I have promised a reviews of the Oscar winners and competitors too... but for the weekend I offer you a movie that does not need any presentation Alien 3 (IMDB).
A movie with awful reviews. Beware the reviews are awful, not the movie. I find it directed magnificently by David Fincher, probably at his first movie even. Camera movements are slow and rapid at the same time, it gives you the anxiety the movie deserve without all the mambo jumbo of the second chapter of the saga. It takes a realistic look into a detention centre, the embrace of religion by its inmates... not abandoned by the world, but there because of faith and because elsewhere they would not be what they feel to be. Many critics says it is not nice, the cult/sect/religion environment is stupid, but David Fincher does not portray them and evangelical singing church, it is far more realistic. You feel their pain, their fear and yet that not many are fine to repent. They aim to something.
The overall environment is claustrophobic and chaotic when it has to. Fincher makes you sweat with the characters too.
The figure of the doctor helping Ripley is cleaned up by 80's and 90's stereotypes and good stories that people may have expected. The heroes here are real, full of faults. None is fully good or fully bad. Charles Dance is extremely effective in the role. Simply perfect companion of an extraordinary Sigourney Weaver.

The first Alien was a masterpiece, the second was just another blockbuster, but this third well well well this has far more than an entertainment movie. Enjoy it, even as a standalone is understandable.
No, the fourth chapter is not even acceptable.
At the end of the movie you may dislike it, it is a matter of personal choices obviously, but even so compare it with the second chapter and with all movies of its time. You will see what I mean when I say it was damn good.

The poster you can see it is (my opinion eh) stupid. But it is early 90's movie, advertising something without knowing in the way they did back them... hypes.
