Air Doll... have you laughed? Maybe. Are you weirdly interested? Probably.
You think it's a blue movie (as R(A) movies are called in Japan)... but it is not.
So? What is this movie? Well it's from the mind of Hirokatsu Koreeda, who is a famous and awarded Japanese director, its (of this movie eh) director and screenplay writer.
He came back to international fame once again with Shoplifters few years ago. I will have time for that movie, but as I am not here to talk about that, rather about this other, perhaps less known, movie of his: Air Doll (IMDB)
Air Doll as much as most of his other movies, a tale of solitude(s) and hope(s), where the plural is between parenthesis because both are singular and global. It's a movie of a sexual toy man, how can it be more than that?
Well, it is a Japanese movie, so it is more, and that's why it is her ein my review. It goes deep into a society dynamics, accepted or just acknowledged as status quo. Nothing to be ashamed or all to be ashamed. It is human growth in a not human sex toy. Like many Japanese original story does not have/want/aim to convince you about anything, there is no right, no wrong, just things. Like a river flows, events too. Even if they are or they may seem bizarre to us, westerners.
Air Doll is a tale of what it is because it is.
It is acceptance. You will see more of this in many Koreeda works.
Enjoy it. I recommend this movie to whoever wants to see further than usual. Usual what? Usual.
